Bethesda Terrace/Fountain

Description

Known as the heart of Central Park, this two-story terrace was built by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted and includes intricate carvings that showcase both the times of the day and the four seasons of the year. In the center of the terrace sits Bethesda Fountain. Created by artist Emma Stebbins in 1868 and unveiled in 1873, this iconic fountain features the eight-foot-tall Angel of the Waters, who holds a lily, signifying the fresh water system that was brought to New York in 1842. Both the terrace and fountain have been featured in several TV shows and movies, including The Amazing Race and Elf.
